Check out our ideas for creating the perfect yoga room below. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to create a space that provides the calming relief and tranquility you once thought possible only at a yoga studio!
How Much Space Do You Need to Do Yoga at Home?
Ideally, you need enough space to explore in your yoga practice without being distracted or bumping into your surroundings. But, the reality is that most of us have very little space to spare in our living spaces.
Don’t worry. You can do it!
Most brick-and-mortar yoga studios provide about 21.5 square feet for yoga students. Sounds like a lot, but it’s roughly a little under 4 feet wide and 6 feet long.
Worried about space?
Consider placing your mat at the foot of or next to your bed, behind the sofa, or even in your kitchen galley (burners off!). Any of these areas can provide you with enough space for any yoga pose, even if you have to be a little slower kicking that leg up in a downward-facing dog!
In the end, you’ll want enough room to put down your yoga mat, about 68 inches long and 28 inches wide.
Keep It Separate
If you do find yourself with the luxury of space in your home, dedicate a place for yoga and meditation. Not only does it make it easier for you to practice yoga and meditation regularly, entering that space helps prepare you for your classes.
Stepping into a space that you have specifically carved out for your practice (and your personal well-being) also says that you have made a commitment to yourself. This will also increase your chances of successfully achieving your commitments to personal health and well-being.
Keep in mind, you don’t need a separate room to do this. It can be a small area of your bedroom or living room that you close off with dividers when you start your yoga practice.
As long as you can move into that space (both physically and mentally) at the start of your yoga class, that’ll put you on the right path to getting more out of your at-home yoga classes.
How to Decorate Your Personal Yoga Room
Now that you’ve picked out your spot, here are some ideas for how to create and decorate your ideal yoga room. Above all else, your personal yoga space should be as free from distraction as possible.
Choose the quietest area in your home, with the most natural light, and the least potential for interruption (like someone passing through on their way to their workspace).
Remove Clutter
Every item in your personal yoga space should have a purpose. If it doesn’t, then it needs to go. Do an initial organization of the space so you know how you would like it as you start practicing yoga from home.
Take a picture of it. Every couple of weeks, return to the photograph as a reminder of your ideal arrangement. This helps you keep out clutter and prevents you from using decluttering as a procrastination technique to getting on our mat! Ultimately, a home yoga space free of clutter allows you to focus on yourself and get more out of your experience.
Make It Comfortable
You don’t want to be so comfortable that you fall asleep practicing yoga. But if you’re uncomfortable, you can’t focus on getting the most out of your personal yoga experience.
Practicing yoga on the carpet isn’t ideal. It can make it hard to perform yoga poses (especially more challenging ones). But if you’re just looking to meditate, that should be fine.
Hard floors work best for yoga. They provide stability, making it easier and safer to practice a variety of yoga poses at home. And all you need is a simple, non-slip yoga mat for comfortable yoga classes.
Remember: comfort goes beyond what you can immediately touch. Adding a personal touch to your yoga space can put your mind and soul at ease when you move into that space. A few yoga props, inspirational quotes, or calming decorations can do the trick.
And don’t forget about lighting. The right lighting can add a level of warmth that radiates through your soul as you practice yoga at home. Try and stick with natural lighting as much as you can. But don’t be afraid to light up your space (just remember to turn the lights down for savasana!)
How’s the Smell?
Off-putting odors can distract you from your yoga practice. Again, think neutral. Incense, scented candles, or an aromatic spray with essential oils can make your yoga journey pleasant. Remember that scents shouldn’t be overpowering. Instead, the scents you use should welcome you and guide you deeper into your yoga class.
What Are Some Home Yoga Room Design Examples?
You don’t need a separate room to practice yoga at home. Here’s an example of how simple your home yoga space can be:
What Items Do You Recommend for My Personal Yoga Space?
Here’s a simple checklist to help you get everything you need to put your personalized, at-home yoga studio together. Check it out:
- Yoga Mat: A simple, non-stick yoga mat will help you practice safely on sturdy floors. Our founder, Rebecca loves Jade Mats at home and uses Manduka mats for travel.
- Yoga Towel: If you tend to sweat and slip, yoga towels are for you. They are placed on top of your yoga mat and do a great job of soaking up sweat, reducing slippage. This one by yogitoes® is a great addition.
- Yoga Strap: A yoga strap is helpful in certain poses where you might wish you had an “arm extender”! A 6-foot yoga strap is usually plenty long enough, but if you’re on the taller side, we recommend going with an 8-foot strap. We like these straps from HuggerMugger®
- Yoga Blocks: One or two (ideally) yoga blocks are great for creating a little more space within postures- as arm extenders and floor lifters! They are also great to support restorative postures and to sit on for various seated postures, including meditation. We love these sturdy options from HuggerMugger®
- Yoga Blanket and Bolsters: For restorative and yin yoga, there is nothing more luxurious than having your own blankets and bolsters. We like to go oversize on the bolster to get multiple uses, and soft and sturdy on the blankets.
- Room Divider: If you share your space with multiple dwellers, you may want a room divider or screen to provide a little more privacy while you practice. For ideas, check out this great range of options at Ikea.
- Lighting: If your home yoga space lacks natural light, a floor lamp might be nice to brighten up your space.
You don’t need to run out and buy all these items to create the perfect yoga studio at home. Instead, explore your yoga space and add items to it as necessary to enhance your yoga practice.
